Chief Winemaker

Julian Gonzalez

Julian Gonzalez has spent thirty years in Napa Valley's finest cellars — learning, refining, and eventually leading. At Guarachi Family Wines, he brings that accumulated precision to two extraordinary estate vineyards.

Thirty Years In The Making

Julian's path into wine began in 1995 at Louis M. Martini Winery. From there he trained under winemaker Rolando Herrera at Chateau Potelle, Mi Sueno, and Viña Cobos in Argentina — a mentorship that shaped the foundation of his craft.

That foundation led him to Paul Hobbs, one of Napa Valley's most celebrated winemakers. Julian served as Lead Winemaker for all Paul Hobbs Consulting programs from 2007 to 2016 — one of the most demanding and respected roles in California winemaking. It was during this chapter that his friendship with Alex Guarachi deepened, both sharing a belief that the world's best wines come from the right land in the right hands.

"The vineyard tells you what the wine wants to be. The winemaker's job is to listen."— Julian Gonzalez

Steward of Two Estates

In 2016, Alex Guarachi asked his close friend Julian to become Chief Winemaker at Guarachi Family Wines. Julian accepted, bringing his full focus to Meadowrock Estate on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley and Sun Chase Vineyard in Sonoma's Petaluma Gap.

The two sites could not be more different — one defined by volcanic soils and mountain elevation, the other by coastal fog and wind. Julian's approach to each is equally distinct, letting the character of each estate lead and intervening only where precision demands it.

A Partnership Built on Trust

The relationship between Alex Guarachi and Julian Gonzalez predates the winery itself. When Alex decided his family's name was going on a label, Julian was the only person he called.

That trust shows in every vintage. Limited production. No shortcuts. A commitment to making wines that reflect exactly where they came from.
